Have you ever found yourself feeling sorry for an old person just because he/she’s old???

By Daniella Djiogan

I just saw an elderly couple on the bus.

They looked so old that I felt sorry for them.

Not sorry in the sense that they’re poor (because I don’t know if they were)

But sorry for no particular reason

I never really had grandparents in my life, so I rarely saw old people during my childhood.

I just thought about their youth

How did they look 40 years ago? Where did it all disappear to?

I wonder if they regret a thing or two about the way they lived their lives

I wish their memories were recorded on a VCR or something…..so, I could see how it all came to be

Cause the wrinkles on their faces don’t explain or tell me anything about their past.

All I see is a sad, tired, and struggling couple sitting within my sight

 Youth did pass indeed.

Old age only reminds me of death

But more than death, it reminds me of my generation.

Young today but certainly old with passing years.

In that elderly couple, I saw my parents, myself, a significant other, and all other human beings; including the ones who combat old age or seek beauty and happiness in the pleasures of life.
